I attended a very interesting panel on mobile Internet at Ad Tech. Neil Ducray, Managing Director of touchmedia talked about the success of touchmedia's in-taxi cab, web connected screens. A lot is happening from this platform that illustrates the power of mobile Internet.
For example, GPS driven map overlays can show taxi passengers the locations of nearby restaurants, banks, hospitals, etc. Users are even completing bank loan applications from the touchmedia platform. Since the platform has GPRS as well as GPS, users can book tickets and travel, redeem coupons, etc. Today, the platform is not content heavy and is limited to about 20 interactive pages for a site and can load about 12 interactive functions into each unit. For some transactions the user must SMS touchmedia, who then relays any transaction info to the user. However with 3G, the platform will be able to "piggy back" off other site content and display useful information such as theater and airline seating availability.
With 3G, all transactions on touchmedia will be user driven, and the user can choose whatever pay platform they desire, including those requiring credit cards. Neil emphasized that no matter what you do with mobile Internet and cell phones, the small cell phone screen will always be a limitation. Touchmedia in-taxi cab media platforms will be showing flash, video, and potentially a lot of applications from independent developers, who as Neil mentioned are already approaching touchmedia with ideas and proposals. It looks like touchmedia will transform taxis into mobile Internet cafes! The next time you're waiting impatiently for exiting passengers to leave the taxi, the delay may be due to them trying to finish their online game, or complete submission of their mortgage application to the bank!
