Early in the month I posted news about the Chinese Ministry issuing 3G licenses. A move that is intended to advance the Chinese mobile users and provide them with sophisticated multimedia and video services.

Further to this, Reuters said today that the Chinese Government said China’s three telecom carriers will spend 400 billion yuan ($58.5 billion) over the next three years, building out their third generation (3G) mobile networks. This is truly an incredible amount and shows the intent for these carriers to rapidly bring on these additional high speed services.

China Mobile, the world’s largest mobile carrier, will spend 58.8 billion yuan in 2009 to build out its TD-SCDMA network, said the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Smaller rivals China Unicom and China Telecom will each spend about 30 billion yuan in this year of the ox to develop their WCDMA and CDMA 2000 networks, respectively.

China Mobile will build about 60,000 base stations by the end of 2009 when its coverage will serve more than 70 percent of all Chinese cities.

China Unicom will launch 3G services in 55 cities in the first half of 2009.

For the digital marketing professionals in China who have remained skeptical of mobile advertising maybe due for a change of heart. Mobile as a digital channel has remained the poor cousin of Internet advertising in China over the past few years but having high speed services where video and other rich content can be leveraged we may soon give marketers more advertising options and importantly provide a better user experience.

($=6.84 yuan)
