Was running through my plaxo account and thanks to Florian Pihs, I saw the latest numbers from research firm, Analysys of Chinese mobile IM users.
According to the Analysys report, there were 161.12 million active handset-based mobile instant messenger (IM) accounts in China at the end of first-quarter 2010, rising by 18.13% sequentially, according to Analysys International. The total number of registered accounts stood at 388.96 million, increasing by 10.97% on quarter.
Portio Research in an earlier report this year stated that in 2009, the worldwide mobile IM (MIM) user base stood at 191.1 million and this is forecast to grow five-fold to an incredible 955.6 million users in 2014. Meanwhile, worldwide mobile IM revenues are estimated to multiply four-fold from USD 4.3 billion in 2009 to USD 18 billion by end-2014.
Irrespective of the numbers, the growth is impressive and I am in complete ore of Tencent in their ability to dominate IM in China (both wired and wireless). Below is a table of the major IM players in China.
