The digital marketing space is becoming much more sophisticated as digital marketers learn more and explore ways to apply their skills in one area of digital marketing to another. I mean, take SEO and apply to SNS. What do you get- potentially, highly visible personal profiles, companies and/or product/services.

This post explores some simple approaches that Linkedin users (marketers) can use to drive traffic and extend their networks. Granted many that have been in marketing a while would have already done this.. but for those that have yet to do it or don't know what to look out for then keep reading...

In this post, I will focus on Linkedin (Why? .. because is not blocked in China and has a great search feature). As a marketer (and having way too much time) I sometimes spend time plugging in various keywords into the Linkedin search to determine who is using what keywords, phrases in their profiles. The results you get may surprise you.

Here is a simple exercise to highlight what I am talking about. Think of a leader in a particular area, say social media and you would expect them to appear in Linkedin with that expertise highlighted... maybe or maybe not.  Try, for yourself.... click on this link to see who is using social media in their profile "Social Media".

So what does this mean? Simply, you must consider your profile much like an SEM campaign and make your profile keyword rich.

Start by using rich descriptions in your bio and within the description of your current/previous roles.Your  headline should also be changed manually to display your expertise not their last job (which is the default).

I found that when using this keyword density strategy, the location of the keywords are are important for the Linkedin search engine- seems if the keyword are located in the headline and job titles, they will be ranked higher in the result set than if the keywords were placed within the summary section?

One more key point (not relating to search) is to have a photo on your profile. This will add a more personal connection with people landing on your profile. If you want to take a look at my Linkedin Profile it will highlight the use of keywords and summaries designed to attract users searching for particular profile types.

If you think your Linkedin profile shows (good or bad) examples of a search optimized profile them please add the link below in the comments section.
