Chinese Goverment Moves on Leading VoIP Site PDF Print E-mail

Chinese voice over IP service provider UUCall has suspended its services for breaking Chinese laws.

In news in local press and reported by China Tech News, said that the UUCall software and the official website UUCall.com (including the UUCall's service) is suspension because of its failure to adhere to unspecified laws and policies regulating VoIP businesses in China.

Founded in 2004, UUCall has been developed into one of the largest VoIP brands in China. You could consider it a Skype like solution where users can make calls on their computers to any telephone or mobile phone across the world. It is said that the rate of call is CNY0.06 per minute (which is about $0.0) so understandable attractive for people to use for calls.

Back in 2005, the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, which was then called Ministry of Information Industry, issued regulations to limit the entry of Chinese private capital into the operation of VoIP. This policy was mainly to protect the rights and interests of traditional telecom operators and showed worry about the communications quality and communications information security of Internet calls.

But given the rapid growth of Chinese netizens and the maturity of the VoIP technology, it seems the impact by VoIP companies is much greater than anticipated and the past supervising policies have done little in the way of protecting State Owned Telecoms.

China Tech News said that UUCall has not provided details on when it exactly plans to restart services-  Not unexpectedly as I would assume that this is out of their control and the decision is resting in a Government department or two. This outage, which is reportedly affecting 30 million registered users of the UUCall VoIP website is bound to be giving the Company some unexpected grief.

The lesson for Internet Companies operating in China is that you can assume nothing. Can't help thinking how this reminds me of the Internet video sharing website closures of last year...
