Apple Moves Into The Mobile Ads Business - Welcome iAds PDF Print E-mail
Opinion

This has come a little out of left field for me... but on further reflection- why wouldn't Apple get directly into the advertising business? They seem to have missed out on the Admob purchase (lost that one to Google) but showed their hand with an acquisition of Quattro Wireless....

So we can expect to hear more on iAds in the coming few months once it rolls out in the US market on the back of the new OS 4 release. However, I doubt we will any impact here in China and more broadly Asia in the short/mid term but it will be interesting to look for any innovations offered in their mobile ad platform.

Yesterday, Apple Inc gave more details on iAds and their new OS 4.0 software for its mobile devices.  iAds will included in OS 4.0 designed for putting ads into various applications. Steve Jobs, Apple’s chief executive, said that the new system would offer ways for developers to include complex interactive ads in applications for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Apple said it would sell and host the ads and give developers 60 percent of the revenue from ads that run in their programs.

The ads will be seen only on Apple’s products, and it was not clear from the news if Apple has any ambitions to sell ads on other mobile platforms, like those controlled by Google, Microsoft and Research in Motion. The iAd system will be part of version 4.0 of the iPhone OS, the software at the core of the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad.

The new OS 4.0 software will be available in the US for iPhones and iPod Touches in the next few month. But it is sad news for those with the older iPhone 3G as these won't support the new OS. This is a great way to drive iPhone purchases on the back of this new OS but may frustrate those who have recently obtained the 3G version.
