I saw a presentation last week that was entitled, 'The SoMe Strategy'. I commented, "interesting name" and the author (Carol) turned to me and said everyone calls Social Media, SoMe. Wow... I had not even made the connection between SoMe and Social Media .... here was me thinking I was 'in' with the latest in social media trends, yet I did not ever know the latest acronym.

So, this got me thinking.... what else was I missing. There seemed to be a new language that had evolved and here I am talking in complete words and sounding like some old marketer from the dark ages preceding this social phenomena (a few years back). I needed to go in search of these new terms and words... get back into the groove and start sounding like the current generation of social marketers..... enter the sock puppet!

I did not want to just provide the standard 'social media terms'  or 'A-Z of Social Media' as these can be found in many places online. I wanted to pull out the lesser known, obscure terms that I have found .... this will give us aging social marketers the opportunity to toss a few new terms in the conversations next week to impress our colleagues and show our new 'hippness'. If you have some more then please post in the comment section below ... but here are the new ones for me.

SoMe Essential Terms

Troll: A hurtful but possibly valuable loser who, for whatever reason, is both obsessed by and constantly annoyed with, and deeply offended by everything you write on your blog. You may be able to stop them commenting on your blog, but you can’t ban them from commenting on other sites and pointing back to your blog, and you can’t ban them from posting things on their own blog that point back to your site. (Wikipedia)

Sock Puppets: is an online identity used for purposes of deception within an online community. In its earliest usage, a sockpuppet was a false identity through which a member of a community speaks with or about himself or herself, pretending to be a different person ventriloquist manipulating a hand puppet. (Wikipedia)

Shills: The guys who write fake reviews, etc - they want to fade into the background and give the sense that the majority supports an opinion. (This one is from Rand Han - thanks)

Griefer: A player in a multiplayer video game that deliberately irritates and harasses other players. (Wikipedia)

Lurker: A person who reads discussions on a message board, newsgroup, chat room, or other interactive system, but rarely or never participates actively. Research indicates that "lurkers make up over 90% of online groups. (Wikipedia)

Quotterer: Someone who spends most part of the day tweeting ‘inspiring’ quotes to his followers.  (Zitz Solutions)

Twitterhoeia: The uncontrollable urge to share mundane experiences with Twitter followers. (Zitz Solutions)

Meme: An idea, an event or a piece of information that is passed on from user to another till it becomes totally viral. (Zitz Solutions)

So these are just a couple of the weird and wonderful new terms entering our social media vocabulary.... let me know if you can find a few new ones to include in this 'SoMe Essential Terms" and pop them in the comments below.
