Everyone in digital marketing seems to be an expert in Social Media Marketing (SMM). Digital Marketing professionals are generally telling the clients, "You can’t afford not to be doing social media. You can’t simply dismiss Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn as fads".
But is this really true? Are we (as digital marketers) overestimating the importance of this channel? Does SMM complement your traditional media efforts or is it a new replacement for them?
Look, I just want to put forward some questions to get you thinking... of course no right answer exists and it comes down to the specific client and their needs/objectives. But is there a need to educate the professionals in our industry about SMM methodologies or approaches? Is social media simply a channel and flexibility in approach is required to allow for creativity and innovation?
I am in the camp of process orientated SMM.... I believe that social media marketing is a communication/ a message into a community or group online. The basic marketing process holds true in that we still need to identify with the client the appropriate audience, objectives and approach for SMM.
Time for us marketers forget focusing only on the tool or technology of the moment and get back to basics.
Ask yourself; how does social media fit in with my overall marketing strategy and my clients business goals? What results am I (or my client) looking to achieve? Going to market socially is only one key ingredient in a successful marketing plan. You also need to analyze your market, nail your strategy and story, energize your channels and deliver leads and revenue.
I would be interested in those of you that are using SMM and can tell us about successful campaigns and also about the ones that failed (and what lead to this). Please share and look forward to exchanging views on this...
