I guess most of us have been staying up late here in China to watch the World Cup soccer games over this past week or so .. it's not like you can escape the event. The images of players kicking goals are everywhere; from TV commercials to bus stops to Internet banner ads... absolutely everywhere. Moreover, it's not just the official World Cup sponsors but it seems every Brand....
So I start to wonder. Why do these ads aim to align Brands to the World Cup? Are they trying to leverage some of the interest being sparked by this World Cup and become associated to a team or event? Is there some real/perceived value for a Brand to be in the World Cup action?
Firstly, it is clear and obvious from a marketer's perspective that global events such as this World Cup, PGA Golfing, Tennis or even the Cricket has a huge impact on developing and positioning Brands. Further, I have no mis-understanding of this concept nor the reasons why we marketer's advise and manage the process of event marketing.
Being a self confessed rugby and cricket nut... I have never really been into watching soccer but I must admit over the past few weeks, I too have been riveted to my TV in the early hours waiting for Australia to have a miracle game or to support the underdog team trying to make history.
But never being too far from thinking about advertising I was interested in seeing how companies had gone about promoting themselves by taking TV spots or getting Internet search/banner ads... So far, I was most impressed by the cleaver and innovative way Dutch brewery, Bavaria got into the headlines.... During Monday’s World Cup match between the Netherlands and Denmark, 36 spectators were removed from the stadium as they wore short orange dresses.... sounds harmless right. But these weren’t just ordinary dresses. They were supplied by the Dutch brewery, Bavaria, which means they were in direct offense of Fifa’s marketing regulations..... good old ambush marketing!
The TV ads seem predictable and none seem to have captured any discussions online. Most online ads are one dimensional and predictable. Almost like every agency has told their clients that this month is World Cup month and therefore lets roll out the stock image library and put soccer players on our landing pages, banners and in the search engine marketing campaigns....
I say, come on creative agencies.. bring out the radical ideas, push the limits and blow us plain media agency types away...
If you have seen some interesting as then let us know.. pop the link or ad reference into the comment section... And for any Socceroo's reading.. don't give up hope.. Go Aussies :)
